The Automatic Railroad Jumper Cable Tester is a microprocessor-controlled tester designed to automatically perform Hi-Pot and Ten Ampere Continuity (Current) tests on Railroad Jumper Cables. The tester pictured above is configured for the Long Island Railroad’s C-3 fleet of commuter trains and may be easily configured to test other jumper cables.
Due to exposure to vibration, weather and EMI, jumper cable failure is frequently the cause of a multitude of intermittent elusive system problems. Many of these problems can be avoided if jumper cables are periodically tested.
Operating the tester involves turning power on and following screen prompts that were designed for ease of operation. Plug in the cable, Push a start switch, Flex the cable (for intermittent checks), Read the pass or fail completion message. A cable will be deemed “Good” only after it has successfully completed both the Hi-Pot and Current Continuity test. Should the tester detect a failure, the blinking red failure message will identify the wire path(s) responsible for the failure.
In the Hi-Pot mode, the tester will apply up to 1700 peak voltage between each pin to all other pins (630 tests for a 36 pin cable) within a two minute time frame. A Hi-Pot failure will be detected if/when dielectric leakage current exceeds 0.5 milliamperes. For Current Testing, a failure will be detected if/when less than ten Amperes of current flows through any wire path
